North Carolina Whirligig Festival “Give it a Whirl” Art Competition

Entry Deadline:  October 31, 2021, 11:59 PM


For artists and photographers 18 & up


“Give it a Whirl”  Photography and Art Exhibition artists may sign up through the Whirligig Festival website or in person at the Wilson Arts Center at 204 Nash St South. Artwork delivery date is November 3 to Wilson Arts Center between 10-5 Artwork will be on display in Studio 1 at WAC during the festival.


There is no cost to participate in any art competition or event hosted by Wilson Arts during the Festival.

An Independent Judge will choose winners from the “Give it a Whirl” Photography and Art Contest and Exhibition and the Whirligig Festival Children’s Coloring Contest.

Whirligig Park Paint-Off

Murals have vastly become cornerstone expressions of large and small communities.  Wilson Arts is curating talented Street artists from North Carolina to participate in a live outdoor paint-off competition in Vollis Whirligig Park during the North Carolina Whirligig Festival. 

Artists and visitors of all ages are well to share or participate in an interactive art experience and public judging.

Come watch these artists “Give it a Whirl!” as they paint murals during the Festival! Artists will be awarded Visitor’s Choice, Second Place, and Runner-Up honors by visitors of the Festival.

Kids Coloring Competition

Wilson Arts is hosting the Whirligig Festival Children’s Coloring Contest! Coloring pages created by local artists & kids are welcome to download them from the Wilson Arts website, or color in person Saturday morning of the festival.


Located in Studio 2 at the Wilson Arts Center


Kids 5-11 & 12-17

Young artists can choose their favorite local landmark coloring page & complete it at WAC. Must be accompanied by an adult & entries must be completed & submitted by 3:00 on Saturday (the first day of the festival)

All materials will be provided by Wilson Arts & the entries will be on display throughout the festival

The coloring competition will be judged by Abby Boykin,  art teacher at Springfield Middle School.

Top 2 Finalist will be awarded prizes in both age categories


The competition begins at the start of the festival & ends at the time of judging at 1:00 pm. Winners will be announced Saturday afternoon at the Whirligig Park

Chalk Art Competition

Calling artists of all ages! Our 3rd annual Chalk Art Competition is back! This year the competition will take place inside the Whirligig Park as the festival goers enjoy watching the creations come to life!

Entry is free and prizes awarded for ‘Best in Show’ in each category!

Pre-registration is required to allow for space for each artist. Participants check-in at the Whirligig Park beginning at 9:00 am Saturday morning. Chalk will be provided & artists are welcome to bring their own chalk provided they are water soluble (no oil pastels or paints) and all materials must be approved beforehand by the committee chair.

No religious, political or offensive language permitted in your design. Work should be family friendly! Chalk art will stay on display during the duration of the festival. Images of the artwork may be used in publicity photos & social media promoting the festival.
